In-Office Teeth Whitening

For quicker teeth whitening results, Dr. Smith offers an in-office bleaching treatment that takes up to an hour and a half. This tooth whitening system will whiten teeth dramatically.  Since teeth whitening only works on natural tooth enamel, it is important to evaluate replacement of any old fillings, crowns, etc.  Replacement of any restorations will be done after bleaching so they will match the newly bleached teeth.

Teeth whitening is not permanent.  A touch-up maybe needed every several years, and more often if you smoke, drink coffee, tea, or wine.

Reasons for teeth whitening:

  • Fluorosis (excessive fluoridation during tooth development).
  • Normal wear of outer tooth layer.
  • Stained teeth due to medications (tetracycline, etc.).
  • Yellow, brown stained teeth.

What does teeth whitening involve?

This type of tooth whitening system usually requires one visit that takes up to an hour and a half. At your appointment they place a protective barrier over the gums before applying a chemically activated bleach to the teeth. Depending on how white you want your teeth, they generally place the whitening gel on the teeth 3-4 times for 15 minute increments each. It is normal to experience tooth sensitivity during the time you are whitening your teeth, but it will subside shortly after you have stopped bleaching.

The day you bleach your teeth, you will also have impressions (molds) taken of your teeth to fabricate custom, clear plastic, trays. When the trays are ready and you pick them up you will try on the trays for proper fit, and adjustments will be made if necessary.  The trays are worn to help the teeth stay whiter longer and to touch-up as needed.

You will receive care instructions for your teeth and trays, and be encouraged to visit your dentist regularly to help maintain a beautiful, healthy, white smile.
