CLC Visits the Dentist - January 11-12, 2010

Dental Health month is just around the corner and this week we have already had CLC (Creative Learning Center Preschool) come for a visit. They were such good helpers who learned all about what it takes to have healthy teeth and that the dentist is a FUN place! My favorite was when some of the children called our office a "toy shop" after we loaded them down with stickers, toys from the treasure tower, and of course a toothbrush, toothpaste, etc...
We love having LITTLE visitors, so feel free to schedule a Happy Visit with your child if they just want to ride in the chair, get a toy, and realize that going to the dentist isn't scary,
but actually can be FUN!!!
Fun Dental Sites and Activities You and Your Child Can Visit:
Crest Kids - Learn how to get your kids interested in learning about dental health, gum disease and cavities. Includes tips for tykes, parent's guide, product information, and games.
Colgate Kids World- Colgate Kids World provides a safe, fun and educational online world for kids to play games while learning about good oral care. At Colgate Kids World you will find online videos with Dr. Rabbit, a Brush Chart and many fun games for all ages.
Tooth Brushing Charts- My kids love tooth brushing charts and actually like to brush their teeth when I have them hanging on the bathroom wall. I change them out every few months to keep them interested, and they keep brushing.
Dental Activities- Children love to have fun while they are learning. Teaching children about good dental health is easy with these fun, free and educational dental activities, such as puzzles, games, printable coloring pages, brushing charts, fun facts, crafts, dental experiments and more.

We had the privilege of speaking to the children attending "Kids In Action". It is a fun day camp for kids to attend with all sorts of activities ranging from gymnastics to learning about teeth! I wish I could have stayed all day. I even had some great little helpers who I think will make great dentists one day.
School is Almost Out ...
Are You Prepared in Case of a Dental Emergency?

Dental Emergencies can happen at anytime, anywhere so parents be prepared! It could mean the difference between losing or saving your child's tooth.
Here are some tips for how to handle some common dental emergencies:
- Knocked-out tooth - It is important to retrieve a knocked out tooth, hold it by its crown, and rinse off the root of the tooth if it's dirty. Do not touch the root; the root is usually darker than the crown. Do not scrub it or remove any attached tissue fragments. If possible, put the tooth back in its socket. The mouth is usually numb after that kind of trauma, so it will not hurt to put the tooth back into the socket. It is the safest place to transport the tooth, even if the dentist has to remove it and replace it again. If that isn't possible or the child is too young to keep it there, put the tooth in a container with cold milk or cold water (not contact lens saline solution) and contact our office immediately. If it is after hours call (210) 286-9671.
- Broken tooth - Rinse the child's mouth with warm water to keep the area clean. Use cold compresses on the area to keep the swelling down and get the child to the dentist's office quickly. Bring the tooth fragment with you.
- Bitten lip or tongue - Clean the area gently with a cloth and then apply cold compresses to reduce the swelling. If the bleeding doesn't stop, take your child to a hospital emergency room immediately.
- Objects caught between the teeth - Try to gently remove the object with dental floss and avoid cutting the gums. Do not use a sharp instrument. If you are not successful in removing the object, take the child to the dentist.

Children's Dental Health Month - February 1, 2009

Help us celebrate the 60th anniversary of Children's Dental Health Month by taking a moment to take care of your child's teeth. This month serves as an annual reminder to children, parents, and care-givers, of the importance of healthy oral health habits. Here are a few things to remember this month and fun things you can do with your child:
Why are Baby Teeth So Important?
Baby teeth serve important purposes such as helping the child to speak normal and clear, and to chew naturally. Baby teeth also hold a place for permanent teeth to come in properly. Children with cavities eat poorly, stop smiling, and don’t learn properly. Tooth decay is an infection that does not heal without treatment. If cavities are not treated, children can develop infections severe enough to require emergency room treatment and their adult teeth may be permanently damaged.
How do I Take Care of my Child's Teeth?
Brushing children’s teeth twice a day, flossing daily and regular dental checkups are essential for establishing good oral hygiene at an early age. You will need to brush your child's teeth until they are old enough to do it on their own (when they are able to rinse and spit out the toothpaste without swallowing it).
What should I do if my child falls and knocks out a permanent tooth?
The most important thing to do is to remain calm. Then find the tooth. Hold it by the crown rather than the root and try to reinsert it in the socket. If that is not possible, put the tooth in a glass of milk and take your child and the glass immediately to the dentist!
Do you have a question or concern about your child's oral health, E-Mail them to us!
Keep on Smiling :) We Love Kids and think they are Great!!!

Dr. Paul B. Smith - July 15, 2008

Dr. Smith realized his passion for dentistry in his younger years when he earned his dentistry merit badge and then later when participating in a medical mission trip to Guatemala. Before completing his undergrad at Brigham Young University he served a mission for his church in Guatemala where he became fluent in Spanish. He grew up most of his life in California but moved to Texas where he graduated from the University of Texas Dental School with an honor for Excellence in Clinical Dentistry. While at dental school he met and fell in love with his wife Jamie who was attending Dental Hygiene school at the time.
While preparing to move to Kingwood, Dr. Smith worked as an associate in San Antonio for over 3 years. During that time he realized the most rewarding part of dentistry was when he could bring smiles to his patients. He also tries to find time to bring smiles to others by volunteering at schools, going on mission trips, participating in dental health projects and any other way he can contribute and give back to the community. In his personal time he enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing and especially spending quality time with his wife Jamie and his two little boys Eric and Owen.
